The Parish Nurse Ministry: The Parish Nurse works to keep people well, to empower them, to educate them, to teach them, and to care for them. The P. N. addresses the person holistically, recognizing that the body cannot be separated from the spirit. The health ministry means helping people to integrate mind, body and spirit. It is not delivering traditional medical care. The P.N. is involved in the continuum of health. Parish nursing uses a public health model to balance the themes of wellness (health promotion, disease prevention) with healing (treating disease, recovery, chronic illness and death). Under the Nurse Practice Act, the professional nurse focuses specifically on: · Assessing health needs · Teaching · Referring to services in the community · Coordinating health care · Counseling regarding health-related concerns · Advocating for those who need a voice
The International Parish Nurse Resource Center identifies the classic roles as follows: · Integrating faith and health within the Parish community · Counseling parishioners on questions of personal health · Acting as a health educator · Acting as a referral agent · Coordinating volunteers · Developing support groups · Advocating for individual and community health
A Parish Nurse promotes wellness by involvement with the congregation in many community organizations. · Cancer Support Groups · Centerfest · Chaplaincy Program (Bedford Memorial Hospital) · Elder Abuse Task Force · Elderfest · Faith in Action Volunteer Nurse Program · Health Cabinet · Life Line Screening · Medicare and You Seminars · Reach for Recovery, Relay for Life (American Cancer Society) · Rx Drug Task Force · Kidney Screenings
The Parish Nurse is a nurse of the church, not simply a nurse in a church. Call me if I can be of assistance. Cell (540) 875-8655, Pam Willoughby, F.C.N.
